TAKE ACTION NJ! (updated 6/25/24)

New Jersey Dog Training Community:

The Alliance for Professionalism in Dog Training (the Alliance) has been working alongside members of the New Jersey legislature to help them shape dog trainer licensure legislation that will be most effective for the state. As you may recall, in 2020, legislators in the state originally introduced a bill that did not include any input from dog trainers. The result of our collective efforts is a bill that we believe will work best for dogs, their owners, and members of our profession – based on the model legislation we developed with the input dog trainers nationwide.

If passed, the state’s new bill, New Jersey’s Dog Training Licensure Act, A1212, will protect consumers and dogs from unqualified trainers by creating a consistent and sensible approach to licensing.

The next phase of our advocacy in New Jersey is for dog trainers to email two critical state legislators to show them that the dog training community supports the legislation and to ask that they support the bill. Please use the template messages on this page as the foundation for your emails to your assembly members, as well as Assemblyman Sterley Stanley and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin now.

Together, we can give a voice to New Jersey dog training professionals to help protect consumers and dogs from unqualified trainers and create sensible laws that permit multiple pathways to licensure. Thank you for your service to the profession and for your input and possible participation in our profession’s efforts! Please send any questions, as well as any feedback you receive from state legislators in response to the message you send, to info@prodogtraineralliance.org.
