Contribute to Our Cause

Across the United States, there is a concerning issue that is eroding the credibility of the dog training profession. Individuals misrepresenting themselves as knowledgeable and ethical dog trainers, are providing sub-standard, or even harmful, services to consumers and their dogs. Recent news headlines vividly illustrate the gravity of this problem.

In response to the pressing need for enhanced oversight and the establishment of minimum standards within the dog training industry, the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers joined forces to launch the Alliance for Professionalism in Dog Training.

The Alliance is actively engaged in a collaborative effort to advance state licensure for the dog training profession, guided by the following objectives:

1. Elevating the voices and knowledge of our professionals in shaping the decisions of policymakers.
2. Safeguarding both consumers and dogs from the real and present dangers associated with unqualified trainers.
3. Designing comprehensive legislation that provides diverse avenues for securing licensure.

Legislators are increasingly recognizing the importance of distinguishing between unqualified and properly qualified dog training professionals. They understand the pivotal role that appropriate training plays in ensuring community safety and fostering peace of mind. The Alliance’s proposed model legislation stipulates that individuals who accept compensation for dog training services must hold a professional state license or be actively pursuing certification under the supervision of a licensed dog trainer. Consequently, it would be deemed unlawful for individuals lacking the requisite education and experience to offer their services to the public.
